Children's Day Giveway Contest on Facebook!

Giveaway time! To celebrate Children's Day in Korea on May 5th, we decided to do a dosirak giveway contest. Children's Day is a big deal in Korea as children get taken out to a day of fun and get lavished with gifts! Making a special dosirak can be part of the fun!

To enter the contest, just post on the Little Seouls Fan Page wall a description of your child's favorite meal. If you can share the recipe and... a photo of the actual meal even better! Thought this would be a fun way for everyone to get new menu ideas! Winner to be selected next Friday, April 23rd so plenty of time to enter. Prize will be a Pororo Dosirak either in blue or pink (you choose).

Children's Day in Korea

Will you be celebrating Children's Day next month? Children's Day, a national holiday in Korea, is celebrated on May 5. Children's Day is like Christmas over there, as children are given gifts and treated to a day of fun to places like amusement parks, zoos, museums, festivals and the like . The day was originally created by Children's author, Pang Jeong Hwan, as a way to honor children as he believed they are the future of the nation.

If you are planning to celebrate this holiday in the states, above are some picnic ideas for creating a cute dosirak for your child! These are creations we found on the web by creative Koreans!

Just for Fun

We can't seem to stop talking about Boys Over Flowers! So if you still haven't watched it, we highly recommend it. One of our cousins, who is also 2nd generation Korean American, told us that watching the drama has helped her learn more about Korean culture. And boy is she addicted to it!

Since we are talking about dosiraks, we felt we had to include the cute dosirak designs that lead character Jandi created for lead man, Joon Pyo. :)

What's inside Jandi's bento box? Rolled egg omelete, broccoli, pink and white fish cakes, sausages wrapped in sea weed and chopped red bell peppers.

Here's a cooking video by Maangchi making Joon Pyo's favorite, the rolled egg omelete, which is a favorite dosirak (lunch box) item.

Valentine's Day Dosirak

I'm always so amazed by the creative ways people decorate their dosirak in Korea. Here's a cute one I found with Hello Kitty holding a heart saying I Love You. What kid wouldn't want to open their lunch box to find this creation?

Kimbap...the perfect meal!

Picture from ZenKimchi.

It's got everything...protein, veggies and carbs. Koreans like to make this when they go on trips or picnics since it's easy to eat. It also makes a great dosirak!

Our mom loves to make the kids mini versions for their small mouths! She usually puts bulgogi in it. They love it!
