Ben 10 in Korean

If you have a son who is 5 years and older, I'm sure you are very familiar with Ben 10. I heard Cartoon Network is aired in Korea and was amused to find the Ben 10 theme song in Korean. My son had a blast listening to it.

Credit to you tube poster,kody5yeyo for finding this.

Book Highlight: The Green Frogs

This is a popular Korean folktale re-told by many generations of Korean parents to their young children. It is a story about 2 frogs who never obey their mother and always do just the opposite. Growing up, our parents would tell us this story to teach us the importance of obedience. In Korea, children who don't listen to their mother are called "chung-gaeguri" or green frogs. Author Yumi Heo does a good job of telling the story in English with artistic graphic illustration.

Makes a great bedtime story with a good lesson!

Looking for a good piano program for your kids?

Like most Korean parents, I've been taking my son to piano lessons since he was 5 years old. It's not because I'm doing the Korean thing but my son actually loves music. He takes after his dad.

Anyways, he's been going to the Yamaha Music school near our home. I highly recommend it. It's in a group setting and they have classes for each level. My son's in a class of about 6 kids about his age. They provide Yamaha books, DVDs and CDs for your kids to make it more fun. They also sing and dance in the class to teach them pitch and rhythm.

They have classes throughout the country. It's more affordable than doing private lessons which I think would be boring compared to the group lessons...plus the peer pressure does wonders! They have classes starting at age 3.

64th Anniversary of Korean Liberation Day

Korean Liberation Day is celebrated annually on August 15 to commemorate the liberation in 1945 from Japan's 35 year rule. The Korean American Traditional Artists Association, KORUS House and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea are hosting an Art Exhibit to showcase nearly 50 selected works of art from the Third Nationwide Korean American Art Contest held in 2009. The art exhibition tour begins on Thursday, August 13 at KORUS House in Washington DC. It will then travel to the Jaisohn Center in Philadelphia from Sept. 8-15 and then to the Korean Education Center in Los Angeles from Oct. 1-15.

A great way to teach your child about Korea's history and celebrate Liberation day through art!

Great Baby's First Dol Ideas!

I recently came across a blog called the Im Family. Sang, the mom, recently blogged about her son's dol and thought I'd share her great ideas with our readers. Sang is also a talented cake designer and gives private lessons in her home in Fairfax, VA.

Here is the cake she made for her son's dol. I love all the traditional touches she put on the cake!

She also hand-made her son's invitation! I love the 3D flower in the front and how it opens up into this elaborate but also very traditional card.

For party favors, she put her son's picture on round metal tin cans. Love it!

Lastly, she made the doljabi board/picture board.

Here guests get tickets to place their bet on what they think her son would pick in the doljabi. Once her son picks up an object, they'll pick a winner from the tickets. That winning ticket would then get a prize.

If you'd like to share your dol ideas, send us an email at info@littleseouls.com! You may be featured on our blog!

A Perfect Korean Summer Dessert!

We recently came across another great Korean cooking site at http://aeriskitchen.com. To our delight, Aeri ("the cook") posted a cooking video on how to make a popular Korean dessert called Pot Bing Su! A lot of Koreans like to eat Pot Bing Su during the summer since it is so refreshing to eat. Its main ingredients include crushed ice, red bean, milk, fruit, mochi (rice cakes) and corn flakes. You can also add ice cream as well!

National Children's Museum of Korea Opens Today

The National Children's Museum will be the first children's museum to get an official status as a national institution. They will have special exhibitions that will showcase children's culture. The museum will also have a exhibition of what the streets were like in the old days.

The museum will also have educational programs for kids, teachers and parents. They will be offering hands-on experiences. They will also learn about Korean folklore.

Children will experience what Korean life was like in traditional times such as traditional clothing, housing, food and games. They will also have an outdoor play area to showcase the traditional games and activities.

This sounds like a great place to visit with your children to experience true Korean culture for not only the kids but for adults as well. If you do go visit, please let us know what your experience was like!
