Korean Baby Gold Ring

Koreans have valued gold for centuries and it has been a long lived tradition to give out gold rings to babies celebrating their first birthday. The gold ring signifies "longevity and hope for a prosperous life." Most families typically have about 5 to 15 dol rings that they have received as gifts. Customarily, these rings are kept in a safe place until the child reaches adulthood. Usually, parents will later melt the ring into a necklace or a larger piece of jewelry and give it to the child when they are older.
As the gold price has soared, along with a falling economy, the tradition of giving a dol ring has declined in recent years. For those who want to continue the tradition, many are opting for "half don" rings since these are less expensive while significant in meaning. Despite the increase in gold price, many Koreans still prefer to give a traditional dol ring than giving cash.
Currently, we are taking special orders for the rings, so if you need one, click here.

Making Dol Go-Im with Paper Towels

We got a lot of feedback from people saying how they loved the Gamble's post on "How to make Dol Go Im (Dol towers)." Here's another way people make them using paper towels! Credit to creative crafter, Petitemandoo. Thank you Susan for letting us post this!

Directions:
  • You can use any type of hard candy really. Or Goya beans. I used starburt jelly beans and white and blay goya beans. This isn't really hard. It's just very time consuming and you WILL burn your fingers.

    You will need:
    - Hot glue gun
    - Hot glue sticks
    - Hard candy / Beans / Gum balls
    - Paper towel rolls

  • I did 5 of them. You can do whatever design your heart desires. I wanted to do a mouse for the year that she was born so I actually found this picture online of Hello Kitty in a mouse costume, got rid of the costume part, blew it up, and taped it to a paper towel roll.

Fruit Decoration Idea for Dol (Dohl) Party

The center table for a Korean child's first birthday party, otherwise known as a "Dol," always includes a collection of fruit on display. Usually, parents will decorate the dol table by stacking fruit on a platter or carving out creative fruit centerpieces.

Recently, I got a Edible Arrangements fruit gift and it made me think about how perfect these would be for a dol party fruit display!

Or if you are crafty, you can try making these beautiful fruit displays yourself! Here's a youtube video of how to make a beautiful rose bouquet out of watermelon! Amazing!

New Doljabi Raffle Tickets!

What are doljabi raffle tickets? These tickets are given out to party guests at the beginning of a dol (tol) first birthday party. Each ticket has an unique number on it and each guest is handed one ticket. At the sign in table, the host will provide labeled doljabi item containers for the guest to predict which doljabi item your child will select during the doljabi event. For example, if the guest thinks your child will select the pencil, they will place the raffle ticket into the jar labeled "pencil." At the end of the party, when the child selects the doljabi item, the host will pick up the jar labeled with the selected doljabi item and select a raffle ticket. The guest with the winning raffle ticket usually goes home with a small prize.

If you want to learn more about, the doljabi event, please click here.

New! Personalized Doljabi Poster Board

After much requests, we now have a Doljabi Board for boy and girl! Can customize with child's name and picture.

The poster board is usually placed at the front sign in table for guests to "guess" which item the child will pick during the Doljabi.

Price is $24.99 which includes the cutouts for the cups/containers. The size is 12"x18" and will come rolled up in a poster mailer. We recommend getting a frame to put this in. Makes a great keepsake!
