How to make your own Dol Towers (Dol Go Im)

Tori Gamble shares how she and her family made their Dol Towers:

We first went to the hardware store 'Home Depot' and bought a 8" wide concrete pouring tube (about 4 ft long). We then measured the tube for cutting into four equal cylinders. Next we cut the tube with a large utility knife.

Then we took each tube and glued paper to cover the facing sides. For the Gum-ball and Candy Mint designs we drew a grid to help with the placement of the candies. For the Year of the Rat design we drew a Cartoon Rat to help guide us in placement of beans. For the 'Celebrate 1st Birthday in Hangul' we printed out the fancy hangul and placed it on the tube to help guide us in bean placement.

Then let the hot gluing begin! Each day/night during our daughter's naps we were busy gluing for about 2 weeks.

For the cookie tower we used a paper towel roll for the center glued to a piece of cardboard. We then mixed up some gingerbread icing and began stacking in a free form design. (Just let the artist free thyself!) The cookie tower was by far our favorite to make, since we got to munch on broken unusable cookies after we completed out work.

The Gamble Family

These look awesome! How did you do the top of the tubes?

They glued cardboard to the tops and cut the edges off with a utility knife.

Could the Gambles (or someone from the Little Seouls team) elaborate on how to go about making the cookie tower? I can't seem to picture the procedure.... TIA!

I think she started stacking them by making the base first and going up from there. The cookies stay together with the gingerbread icing she used. Tori -please add your comments if you did it differently. Thanks!

Here's what Tori Gamble said:

We purchased 10 packages of OREO Cookies (5 brown/5 cream). We hand-sorted the cookies to make sure not to use any broken ones. Next removed some paper towel pieces to make sure the cookies would fit snug around the roll. Then glued the paper towel roll to the small piece of cardboard. Then started placing the cookies around the paper towel roll to find a pattern that seemed to look cool. We mixed up some gingerbread icing (just an easy recipe we found online). The design we went with was 1 brown and then 1 cream cookie all the way around, very simple. Then for the next row the same thing, placing the cookies a top of the first row of cookies in a tiered A form using the icing as glue at the points of contact. We continued this pattern to the half way point and then began stacking the colors in the opposite direction. The design could have been anything and it would look cool, just go with it and have fun. Oh and don't forget the best part, eating the broken cookies with family after the tower is complete!

Icing Recipe:

Ingredients
3 ounces pasteurized egg whites
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 cups confectioners' sugar

Directions
In large bowl of stand mixer combine the egg whites and vanilla and beat until frothy. Add confectioners' sugar gradually and mix on low speed until sugar is incorporated and mixture is shiny. Turn speed up to high and beat until mixture forms stiff, glossy peaks. This should take approximately 5 to 7 minutes. For immediate use, transfer icing to pastry bag or heavy duty storage bag and pipe as desired. If using storage bag, clip corner. Store in airtight container in refrigerator for up to 3 days.

Thank you so much for your blog! What kind of beans did you use for the chuk-dol tower? And the mouse tower? Where did you get your materials? I'm new to all these wonderful arts/crafts projects so any guidance is greatly appreciated!

Hi! These are awesome! Thank you so much for posting these great tips on creating the dol towers! I can't wait to start my own project. But I need your help, what kinds of beans or candy did you use on the mouse and the chuk-dol towers? I'm new to arts&crafts so any help is greatly appreciated! I bought my first glue gun so I make these. =)
Thanks!

Most beans could work....just go to your nearest market and you will likely find the ones she used. People use all kinds of candies. I believe skittles is a popular one. I've seen some dol towers made out of cheerios as well. Have fun!

how did you print out the hangul writing?

You can get the hangul print out here if you can't do it on your own.

**sorry i posted twice, I wanted to check the "email follow up comments" box!

You can make it in advance - but you probably want to spray a preservative of some sort. They sell these at local craft stores.

what's the meaning of the mouse one? i have seen other pictures of cow ones. for a minute i thought it was some sort of zodiac thing but i only came across those 2 animals.

little seouls said...

Yes, it is based on the Chinese Zodiac - you saw ox and mouse/rat because 2009 was year of ox and 2008 was year of the rat - so if your child was born in 2009, then some parents like to make a dol go im to represent that year of ox. Hope that helps!

They look great! Just wondering where you bought the bulk gumballs and how much was needed to complete the 8in. cylinders.
Thanks!

Hi! These are so great. Thanks for posting. Can you tell me where you go the gumballs? I looked online but they are kind of expensive... Thanks again!

Can you tell me where you got your gumballs? I looked online but all the bulk places are WAY too big! (I don't want $40 worth of one color..:))
